The humble Proco Rat – a staple of distortion throughout the 80s, and then later rediscovered by people that couldn’t afford expensive pedals or just liked the sound. By the way, I refuse to acknowledge the Rat as a fuzz pedal. Others may, but not me… Excellent analysis on Electrosmash if you have somehow missed it – link here The … Read more
A classic phaser from the mid-seventies – the Musitronics Mu-Tron Phasor II. It has the same six-stage phaser as the Bi-Phase, with less happening in the oscillator section. This is the hardest layout I have ever done and took some time to finish and check… including some time wasted after I started using a layout with … Read more
I’ve already built the Micro V, and it’s a really cool-sounding envelope filter, so I thought I might try the Musitronics Mu-Tron III. It’s generally regarded as THE envelope filter of its day. As much as I love a bit of fuzz, I really do enjoy sitting in a groove with an envelope filter running…. Note … Read more
The MXR M-103 Blue Box is a sub-octave fuzz (two octaves down). It’s not a clean sub-octave either, pretty dirty really, well it’s a fuzz… kind of synthy on some settings. Might want to check how many 56k resistors you have before starting this. MXR BLUE BOX – VERO LAYOUT BLUE BOX OCTAVE MOD Same … Read more
Nothing to see here – just a Marshall Blues Breaker… quite the classic today, bit did not do well when it was released. MARSHALL BLUES BREAKER – VERO LAYOUT
I would recommend breadboarding this prior to committing to solder. The Interfax Harmonic Percolator is very tweakable, and sometimes takes some adjusting to get it right. There’s pages on the Harmonic Percolator on DIY Stompboxes. INTERFAX HARMONIC PERCOLATOR – POINT TO POINT LAYOUT
A very close relative of the Conrad Buzz Box, the UMI Buzz Tone. Same same but with a contour control on the output. UMI BUZZ TONE – VERO LAYOUT
Another simple one – the Conrad Buzz Box and Volume Expander – there is no volume expansion happening; this is just fuzz. This is an easy one to convert to NPN, and there’s quite a bit of discussion on the usual forums re transistors. Good results have been seen with low-gain silicon in Q1, and germanium … Read more
A nice simple one – the Jordan Boss Tone. JORDAN BOSS TONE V1 – POINT TO POINT LAYOUT The California version. JORDAN BOSS TONE V2 – POINT TO POINT LAYOUT Still the California version, with a few minor variations. JORDAN BOSS TONE V3 – POINT TO POINT LAYOUT This is the NPN / PNP transistor … Read more
